Lamjung. The 70 MW Mid-Marsyangdi Hydropower Project in Lamjung district has stopped power generation today and started cleaning the turbine after the amount of sand and sediment in the Marsyangdi River increased due to incessant rains.
The project located at Dalal of Besisahar Municipality-1 has stopped the production of electricity from this afternoon and started cleaning the sand accumulated in both turbines. According to project chief Tara Dutta Bhattarai, the project has been shut down after taking permission from the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) as the flow of sand in the Marsyangdi River may be affected due to the increase in the flow of water in the river.
“A lot of sand is coming in with the water in the river. We have started cleaning the sand in both the turbines by shutting down the project from this afternoon as it may affect the turbines,” he said.
According to him, it will take at least four TAG_OPEN_div_16 to five hours to complete the sand cleaning work of the turbine. After the cleaning work is completed, the power generation will be resumed depending on the situation. Mid-Marsyangdi is the first major hydropower project to be constructed in Lamjung. The project has two turbines of 35 MW capacity generating a total of 70 MW of electricity.
