Kathmandu. The Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation has said that the Dhap dam (dam) located in the Shivapuri-Nagarjun National Park area of Gokarneshwor Municipality-1 is safe.
Issuing a press release on Saturday, the Nagmati and Dhap Dam Project under the Department of Irrigation under the Ministry, stated that the Dhap dam and its main structures constructed to meet the water requirement of the Kathmandu Valley during the dry season are completely safe so far.
After questions were raised about the condition of the Dhap dam after heavy rains, the Nagmati and Dhap dam projects clarified the situation. The project has also released a video of the fact that the risk seen in the dam area a few days ago has also been completely removed.
The technical team has been regularly monitoring the condition of the dam, water surface and the water flow as the water level has increased in the reservoir and surrounding areas following the continuous monsoon-induced rainfall.
The safety measures were taken swiftly after a landslide occurred on the roadside near Saddle Dam-1 on the evening of September 10. According to the project, about 400 litres per second of water has been continuously released through the outflow since the evening of the same day. As a result, the water level of the reservoir has come down by 2.38 meters to 2084.80 meters and about 35 percent of the total stored water has been safely drained.
According to the project, the normal water level of Dhap Dam is 2087.14 meters. If the water level reaches above this point due to heavy rains in the coming days, then the excess water will automatically go out of the spillway. As the amount of rainfall is decreasing, the amount of water entering the dam is also expected to decrease.
The project has expedited the works of drainage, embankment and emergency management in the landslide-affected areas. The project has requested the public not to panic unnecessarily and only rely on official information as the safety and technical evaluation of the dam is being carried out.
