Lamjung. The water level and flow of the Marsyangdi river have increased due to the rains. The District Administration Office has said that there is no immediate risk of flood in Lamjung.

Chief District Officer Krishna Prasad Khanal said that there is no need to worry immediately as the water level in the river is decreasing. According to him, the water level in the river has doubled as compared to the floods and landslides that occurred in June-July a few days ago, but now the situation is gradually decreasing.

“Now the water level is receding. A few days ago, the water level was double as compared to the floods and landslides in June-July, but now it is returning to normal again,” he said. “There is a situation where we can live safely.” ”

Earlier, the coastal areas around the Marsyangdi River were also alerted after there was a risk of flooding due to landslides in Ghattekhola in Chame area of Manang. At present, the water level of the river is decreasing in the Lamjung section.

However, due to incessant rain on Sunday, the floods damaged physical structures in various parts of the district. A motorable bridge over the Marsyangdi River between Besisahar Municipality-11 and Udipur area has also been damaged.

Vehicles traveling through the bridge to the center of Dordi Rural Municipality and Besisahar-11 among other areas have been affected after the bridge was damaged. Chief District Officer Khanal said that he would go to inspect the bridge and other places damaged by the floods today.

Hydropower Project Preparation for Resumption

He said that after the inspection, the repair work of the bridge will be started as per the need. The water level in the river had also increased and the hydropower projects in the Marsyangdi corridor were also affected.

The 70 MW Mid-Marsyangdi and 50 MW Upper Marsyangdi ‘A’ hydropower projects had stopped power generation on Sunday and released the water completely. Chief District Officer Khanal said that preparations are underway to restart both the hydropower projects as the water level in the river is receding.

He said that the projects will come into operation once the condition of the river is safe. Due to the incessant rains, the water flow in the Marsyangdi river increased and the amount of mud, sand and sediment increased, which increased the risk to the projects. Keeping this in mind, the power generation was stopped and the water was released out for safety.

According to Chief District Officer Khanal, the condition of the river is gradually returning to normal. He said that although the water level is decreasing compared to a few days ago, alertness should be maintained in view of the rainfall situation.
