Kathmandu. KATHMANDU — The Crow Tihar festival is celebrated every year on the day of Kartik Krishna Trayodashi.
This morning, as the messenger of Yamaraj, the crow is being celebrated by giving sweet things to eat.
This festival is celebrated today as per the scriptures as the festival should be celebrated on the day of Trayodashi at sunrise.
It is mentioned in the scriptures that the crow is considered as the messenger of death as Yamraj knows the news of the people through the crow. On this day, the crow is made happy by offering sweet food along with worship so that the crow can bring good news to Yamraj. In folk practice, it is also customary to say ‘Shubh Bol, Shubh Bol, Shubh Bol’ when the crow comes to the house. It is believed that if a crow comes around the house and screams, it has brought some news.
A special worship is performed at the Kageshwori Mahadev Temple at Kageshwori Manohara municipality-1 today. Similarly, the crow is also worshiped at the Kageshwori Temple in Hanumandhoka. A large statue of a crow has been built here.
The Tihar festival is also associated with the belief that the wrongdoers will be punished by Yamraj and those who do good deeds will be protected by Dharmaraj. In order to get rid of Yama torture, the process of Yama Deepdan in the name of all the family members has started from Saturday evening. There is a Vedic Sanatan classical method to perform Yama Deepdan facing south. There is a classical belief that donating Yamdeep will get rid of Yama torture.
This year, due to the fluctuation of dates, Yamapanchak started in the evening on the day of Kartik Krishna Trayodashi. Similarly, the Dhanteras festival is also celebrated on Saturday to buy jewelry and copper utensils to keep Laxmi stable. There is a religious belief that if you buy jewelry and utensils on this day, Lakshmi stays stable at home.
