On the day of Kartik Shukla Chaturthi, one takes a bath and eats one meal. On the second day of Kartik Shukla Panchami, kheer (Kharna) made with sugar is offered to the sixth mother and the devotees eat as prasad and eat a meal of fruits without salt.

According to Guheshwori Gaurighat Chhath Puja Committee, the main day of the festival is observed on the sixth day of the month of Kartik Shukla and the ritual of offering prayers to the setting sun in the evening.

On the day of Shashthi, the festival concludes after staying awake all night and worshiping the rising sun in the morning on the day of Kartik Shukla Saptami. There is a religious belief that if the sun is worshiped and offered in the Kartik Shukla Paksha methodically, it will prevent skin diseases. Chhath which was celebrated in limited areas of the Terai before 2046 BS has now adopted a national form. Decorations have been made on the banks of the Gaurighat area, Kamalpokhari, Bagmati, Nakkhu and Bishnumati rivers from Guheshwori in the capital for the Chhath festival. The devotees of Chhath have been staying pure by eating pure food since Kartik Shukla Chaturthi. On the day after Kojagrat Purnima, i.e. from Kartik Krishna Pratipada, some people do not eat tamasic foods like garlic, onion and eat pure or sattvic food. Therefore, this festival has been established as a festival to be celebrated in a very sacred manner.
