According to the historical mythology Mahabharata, when Draupadi and five other Pandavas were in exile, they worshiped the Sun God for the success of their incognito. It is said that at that time the Pandavas lived in the court of King Virat. According to folklore, the tradition of celebrating Chhath started from that time.

According to Surya Purana, Anusurya, the wife of Atri Muni, was the first to observe the Chhath fast. As a result, she inherited unwavering good fortune and her husband’s love. It is mentioned in the Surya Purana that the tradition of celebrating ‘Chhath Puja’ started from that time.

All the physical development of the world is based on the sun. Without the power of the sun, no trees, plants, animals, animals can exist. Many doctors have written books on the treatment of sun rays. Surprising treatments for many incurable and incurable diseases have also been found with the rays of the sun.

In the Samba Purana, it is said that Samba, who was suffering from leprosy by the curse of his father Shri Krishna and Maharishi Durvasa, was cured of the disease as a result of worshiping the sun. There is a popular belief that fasting during the Chhath festival relieves one from sorrow and poverty. Those who are unable to fast during this festival get their wishes fulfilled by another faster. People with financial constraints celebrate this festival even if they beg for alms.

On the day of Kartik Shukla Chaturthi, one takes a bath and eats one meal. On the second day of Kartik Shukla Panchami, kheer (Kharna) made with sugar is offered to the sixth mother and the devotees eat as prasad and eat a meal of fruits without salt.

According to Guheshwori Gaurighat Chhath Puja Committee, the main day of the festival is observed on the sixth day of the month of Kartik Shukla and the ritual of offering prayers to the setting sun in the evening.

On the day of Shashthi, the festival concludes after staying awake all night and worshiping the rising sun in the morning on the day of Kartik Shukla Saptami. There is a religious belief that if the sun is worshiped and offered in the Kartik Shukla Paksha methodically, it will prevent skin diseases. Chhath which was celebrated in limited areas of the Terai before 2046 BS has now adopted a national form. The government has been giving a public holiday throughout the state on this occasion since 2046 BS. A few years of leave was cut in between, but now it is being given again.

Decorations have been made on the banks of the Gaurighat area, Kamalpokhari, Bagmati, Nakkhu and Bishnumati rivers from Guheshwori in the capital for the Chhath festival. The devotees of Chhath have been staying pure by eating pure food since Kartik Shukla Chaturthi. On the day after Kojagrat Purnima, i.e. from Kartik Krishna Pratipada, some people do not eat tamasic foods like garlic, onion and eat pure or sattvic food. Therefore, this festival has been established as a festival to be celebrated in a very sacred manner.
