Nagarjuna Mayor Basnet, Padma Colony owner found guilty of corruption: 8 years in jail, over Rs 300 million fine

Kathmandu. Kathmandu: Mayor of Nagarjun Municipality Mohan Bahadur Basnet has been found guilty of corruption.

He has been sentenced to eight years and three months in jail and fined more than Rs 300 million. The special court has given this decision in the corruption and money laundering case.

A division bench of Court Chairman Tek Narayan Kunwar and member Ram Bahadur Thapa found Basnet guilty of taking bribe and money laundering.

Basnet had taken a bribe of Rs 92,246,032.33 by taking undue advantage in the plot of land. He has been sentenced to eight years in jail and fined Rs 23 million 61 thousand 508 rupees in the case.

Basnet has been sentenced to three years in jail and fined Rs 262.54 million as per the Money Laundering Act, 2064.

He has been sentenced to three months and 18 days in jail and a fine of Rs 26,254,600.46 as per sub-section 7 of the act.

The court has ordered to confiscate the illegally acquired property of Basnet. Likewise, Basnet has to deposit Rs 10.5 million as compensation to the Victims’ Relief Fund as per the Crime Victims Protection Act, 2075 BS.

Raju Kandel, proprietor of Padma Colony Pvt Ltd and Padma Merchant Company Pvt Ltd, has been sentenced to eight years in jail. He will have to deposit Rs 922,460.32 to the Victim Relief Fund. Kandel and his companies have also been fined Rs 23 million along with Basnet.
