The nightly mountains and caves of Dhakmar attract tourists

Mustang. On the road near Ghami village of Loghekar Damodarkunda Rural Municipality-2, a mountain can be seen with holes in the night. This ratamme hill of Upper Mustang on the Jomsom-Korala Highway, which is a national pride project connecting the north and south, is located near Dhakmar village of Loghekar Damodarkunda-2 here.

Although it is believed that the hill itself is naturally red, locals say that the reason for the dhakmar mountain being red is linked to religious legends. With the construction of physical infrastructure, the red hills and caves of Dhakmar have started attracting tourists.

According to the Loghekar Damodarkunda Rural Municipality Office, the arrival of domestic and foreign tourists has started increasing in recent times due to the emphasis on infrastructure construction aimed at promoting tourism.

According to Lopsang Chomfel, chairman of Loghekar Damodarkunda Rural Municipality, the story of Guru Padyasambhava is associated with the dhakmar hill. “In the 8th century, guru Padyasambhava had torn the land of an anti-religious demon in the north near Ghami khola of Mustang and threw it into the Gutrabhundi Ghami river and in the process, the blood of the demon was taken out and mixed with the huge hill of Dhakmar village,” he said.

A 200-meter-long wall has been constructed near ghami rivulet with the demon’s intestines removed and thrown there. Chairman Chomfel said that it is a religious belief that the huge mountain of Dhakmar has turned red due to the blood of the demon.

The length of the huge hill near Dhakmar village is more than two kilometers. Any tourist visiting North Korala border and Upper Mustang can see the Ratamme Hill located here when they reach Ghami of Mustang. “In the absence of tourism promotion and necessary publicity, we have found that tourism seems to be oblivious to the artistic hills and historical significance,” he said.

There are more than 100 caves in the artistic hole with historical and religious beliefs, said Chomfel. Although there are many porous caves here, infrastructure is being constructed as per the goal of developing some caves located in the hills around Geo Park near Dhakmar village as tourist hubs, he said.

The rural municipality has constructed a staircase with railings to reach the cave located at a high place here to connect it with the Geopark heritage of Dhakmar village, said Chairman Chomfel. “It is difficult to reach Jio Cave now. In the current fiscal year, we have spent Rs 1.5 million to construct half-way road including railings and staircases to the cave,” he said, adding, “We have allocated Rs 2.5 million for the construction of all the infrastructures leading to the cave in the coming fiscal year. ’

Thukten Tsering Gurung, ward chair of Loghekar-2, said that the cave was built around 2,000 years ago in the hills near Dhakmar village. “Experts say that before the settlement was built here, people used to take shelter by making caves by digging the hills here. There are dozens of caves located here,” he said.

Ward Chair Gurung said that the cave near the village has been developed as a geo park in collaboration with the locals and the municipality. According to him, foreign tourists come to the Geopark cave to pay attention. “From ratamme geopark cave, the Nilgiri mountains and the surrounding glaciers look lovely and beautiful. It is not only a meditation center, but infrastructure is being constructed so that it can be viewed,” he said.

Social Development Office Mustang has also collaborated with Loghekar Damodarkunda to promote Geopark Cave. The office is constructing a geo protection wall with railings in the man-made Geopark cave, office chief Nirpati Darji said. He said that the wall has been constructed at a budget of Rs 1 million in the current fiscal year so that it can be easily viewed from the cave without any risk. He said that cooperation has been made with the locals to promote tourism as there is more tourism potential here.

Darji said that the locals of Dhakmar village, who are dependent on agriculture and animal husbandry business, will gradually be connected to tourism. “That’s why we have already built a greenery geopark on a large area here. A few years ago, the state government had fenced the park with a cost of Rs 3 million. Besides, a box has been constructed by laying stones inside the park,” he said.

According to locals, a huge Buddha statue has been installed by collecting Rs 6.5 million in donations to develop the park as a tourism hub. Dhakmar village can be reached at a distance of two kilometers on the west side of the Jomsom-Korala road.

Dhakmar village can also be reached through Ghami of Mustang. It is possible to reach loghekar or house monastery located in Marang, which is claimed to be the world’s first and oldest, through the dirt road here.
