Mustang. Mustang: Monitoring has begun for preliminary monitoring of the damage caused by the unimaginable floods in Upper Mustang. Chairman of Lomanthang Rural Municipality Tasinrbu Gurung, Vice-Chair Chhumi Bista, Chief Administrative Officer Bikash KC, technical team of the rural municipality, ward chairs and members of all the five wards and security representatives of Nepal Police and Armed Police Force jointly monitored the damage caused by the floods.
Chief Administrative Officer of the rural municipality, KC, said that a total of seven bridges have been damaged in the flood. It is estimated that more than Rs 15 million has been lost due to this, he said.
According to Chief Administrative Officer KC, three motorable bridges, an iron bridge and three kathe bridges, including a concrete bridge connecting Arka-Bharsa, were completely damaged by the flood of Chuama rivulet at Chumjung of Lomanthang-4 on Tuesday evening. Although the road bridges were damaged in the floods, there was no loss of human and livestock.
Chairman Gurung said that the concrete bridge and temporary bridge connecting the Ring Road road and other branch roads within Lomanthang rural municipality have been damaged. Vehicular movement on the Ring Road road has been disrupted due to damage to the bridges due to floods, he said.
It is suspected that the unimaginable flood in Chuama rivulet near Chumjung village of Lomanthang-4 in Upper Mustang may have been caused by the glacial lake burst. Chairman of Lomanthang Rural Municipality, Gurung, said that there was no rainfall in mustang district during the flood.
“We took information from the locals about the weather conditions in the lake of the place and the source when the flood occurred, they said that there was no rain in the area,” gurung said. ’
Armed Police Inspector Bishnu Hari Thapa of the Armed Police Border Outpost (BOP) at Nechung in Lomanthang-2, Chhoser, said that the team that had gone to find out the cause of the flood returned from Chumjung. According to yarsa collectors, there are glacial lakes in the lake, which is the source of chuama rivulet in Chumjung. “We suspect that snowfall is the main reason for the flood here,” he said, adding that it was not known whether there was rain in the lake when the flood occurred.
Chairman of Loghekar Damodarkunda Rural Municipality, Lopsang Chomphel Bista, said that there are dozens of glacial lakes at the source of the branch rivers of Upper Mustang. He said that due to climate change, the ground temperature is increasing, so there is a possibility of snow flakes falling in the higher reaches and damaging the snowfall.
