Kathmandu. Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has held discussions with the chiefs, chairmen and chief district officers (CDOs) of the local levels of tarai-Madhes, which have been declared disaster-hit areas.
Speaking at a coordination meeting organised virtually by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority here today, he said the government was serious about the sufferings of the citizens and the Madhes province has been declared a disaster-prone area on the proposal of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Minister Lekhak directed the Chief District Officers to coordinate and facilitate the identification of problem areas of drinking water and irrigation as well as places to install deep tube wells and deep borings on priority basis. Stating that the distribution of water from tankers should be continued in places where there is no source of water or dry source, he directed to use tankers of the private sector along with security agencies for this purpose.
Home Minister Lekhak said, “If there is a source of water in government offices, schools, hospitals, non-governmental organizations, then they should also be used for drinking water.” There is also a need for strict monitoring as someone can take advantage of the crisis situation to do ‘cartelization’ and black marketing. Pay attention to this. ”
Chairman of the meeting and Executive Chief of NEA Dinesh Prasad Bhatta said that the NRA has already requested the UN bodies, national and international NGOs and The Red Cross to revise their programmes and focus them on Madhes.
In the meeting, the chiefs and chairmen of the local levels and chief district officers of the drought-affected districts including Madhes province briefed about the initiatives being taken to solve the problems including the situation in their local levels and districts.
The Council of Ministers has declared Madhes as a disaster-prone area for three months. Earlier, the Madhes province government had declared the province as a drought-hit area on July 27 after problems arose in drinking water and irrigation works.
