Construction of sunkoshi river bridge stuck for five years

Kavrepalanchowk. Kavrepalanchowk and Sindhupalchowk-based bridge over sunkoshi river has been stuck for the past five years.

The agreement TAG_OPEN_div_26 for the construction of the bridge was signed in August 2077 BS with the objective of providing access to roads in various wards and settlements of Saping of Bhumlu Rural Municipality located east of Kavrepalanchowk. Thousands of people of Bhumlu have been facing problems as the construction company has not completed the work of the motorable bridge on time.

An agreement was signed between TAG_OPEN_div_24 the Department of Roads and Amar Construction Pvt. Ltd. on September 1, 2017 for the construction of a motorable concrete bridge over the Sunkoshi River to connect Chehere of Sindhupalchowk with the road network. According to the locals, the bridge remained in limbo for five years as the contractors had delayed the construction work by Making various excuses even though an agreement was reached to complete the construction work by June 1, 2080 BS.

According to Nirose Maharjan, an engineer at the Bridge Sector Office under the Department of TAG_OPEN_div_22, the company that got the contract for the construction of the bridge has not been contacted even after contacting the office after various excuses.

According to Maharjan TAG_OPEN_div_20, the deadline was extended for 23 months and 25 days at a time as per the departmental decision on May 1, 2081 BS as the contractors did not work within the deadline of the agreement. According to him, the deadline for the construction of the bridge also expired on May 15.

The contract for the construction TAG_OPEN_div_18 of the bridge was signed at a cost of Rs 110 million 742 thousand 200 including VAT. Engineer Maharjan informed that so far three pillars of the bridge have been lifted and only one span has been prepared towards Kavrepalanchowk. He said that the construction company has been instructed verbally and in writing to carry out the work of river embankment to protect the bridge from floods as per the agreement.

Lekh Bahadur Shrestha TAG_OPEN_div_16, ward chair of Bhumlu rural municipality-1, said that the construction of the bridge over the Sunkoshi River has not been completed. “If the bridge is not constructed, the people here have to travel more than 15 kilometers by road.

According to Shrestha TAG_OPEN_div_14, there is a compulsion to travel more than 15 kilometers of road through Tar via Dolalghat. Stating that the bridge was in a state of disrepair due to negligence of the contractors, he said an alternative would be explored after holding discussions with the representatives of the Department of Roads and construction companies.
