Kathmandu. Traders have complained that the meat trade has decreased by half in July. Sandeep Maharjan, who has been trading meat in Kalanki for the last 20 years, said that the fish meat trade has decreased by half with the onset of the month of Saun.

“At other times, 150 chickens were consumed daily, but now it is difficult to consume 80 chickens per day,” he said. ’

Maharjan has been trading in goat and chicken meat for the last 20 years. Even in the previous years, the trade of fish meat was decreasing after the month of Saun. This year, however, there has been a decline in business, he said.

The month of Saun is considered to be the month of pure and holy. This month, the business has decreased due to the increase in the number of people fasting and not eating fish meat. At present, the meat business has been affected due to the absence of weddings and banquets. “The shop is deserted now. ’

Dev Rana, another meat trader, also complained that the meat trade has declined in the month of Saun. Rana, who used to sell up to 30 kg of meat daily till Mid-June, said it is difficult to sell even 15 kg now.

At present, there are about 3,000 meat traders in the capital. There are about 1,000 small and big animal slaughter sites. There are about 250 slaughter houses of small and big buffaloes.

Kmc’s senior veterinarian Dr Awadhesh Jha said that in the recent past, there has been a dominance of those who run fish meat business without registering it as per the standards. KmC is monitoring it regularly to further manage it, he added. According to Jha, many fishermen do not even have the general knowledge that they will do this business.

It is a result of lack of common knowledge about keeping the animal standing on a 12 to 25-hour journey, tied with a rope in the nose, fins coming out of the mouth and cutting all over the body, animals reaching the destination in case of asphalt, Jha said.
