Kathmandu. Nepali society is celebrating Kheer today. It has been a nepali tradition since ancient times to eat dahi chura on July 15 and kheer on July 15 during the rainy season. Experts say that this tradition has been established as kheer made by adding things including spices in milk during the rainy season is good for health.

According TAG_OPEN_div_15 to prof Dr Ram Chandra Gautam, a theologian and former chairman of the Nepal Panchang Judging Committee, kheer, which is considered to be the best sattvik diet in Sanskrit language, has been described in Vedic scriptures as an important item in pitru and deva work. “Farming can also be done in the villages in the month of Saun. There is more grass as there is more greenery. Cows and buffaloes also give a lot of milk when there is a lot of grass. After getting too much milk, it is customary to invite friends and disciples to the house and eat kheer. It is also considered good in terms of health,” he said.

Saun is the month of Lord Shiva. Since Shiva likes milk and milk products, sweets including kheer are offered methodically. As a result, the practice of eating kheer in mid-July may have started, according to theologian Gautam. There is no classical word on it, he said. Since the time of Rishi Muni, those who were invited for pitru work including Shraddha were fed payas i.e. kheer. On the day of Shraddha, the tradition of making payas i.e. kheer in cow’s milk is still continuing.

Rice, savanna, sewai, corn, carrot etc. are made. Beware is placed in the category of fruits. Similarly, there is a tradition of making corn kheer as there is a lot of green corn in the month of Saun. The Nepali Comprehensive Dictionary defines kheer as ‘delicious foods cooked with milk cooked rice, rice in milk, sugar, spices, etc., emulsions, tasmai’.

In Nepali society, it is customary to make curd chura on July 15, kheer on July 15, burnt corn on August 15, ghee sour on December 15, malpuwa on January 15 and feed it to friends and daughters.
