Chitwan. A total of 30 cattle have died in the district due to lumpy skin. According to the Animal Service Office, Chitwan, 30 cattle have died due to the disease since the last week of June.
Dr Sabina Mishra, information officer at the office, said 793 cattle and buffaloes in the district have been infected with the disease so far. Of them, four are buffaloes and 793 are cattle. Khairhani municipality has been most affected by lumpy skin so far, he said.
According to him, 425 livestock have been affected in the municipality so far and 22 have died. In Ratnanagar, 191 livestock have been affected. Where 4 cows have died. Similarly, 75 animals have been infected in Rapti Municipality, 62 in Bharatpur Metropolitan City, 27 in Madi Municipality and 13 in Kalika Municipality. He informed that four animals and cattle have died in Bharatpur Metropolitan City. According to him, three buffaloes and buffaloes have been affected in Ratnanagar and one in Rapti.
The number of farmers getting vaccinated has increased after lumpy skin started appearing in the district. So far, 59,974 cattle have been vaccinated against lumpy skin, he said. Mishra said that the outbreak of this disease is seen in summer due to mosquitoes and prawns. If the disease is seen in cows and buffaloes, symptoms such as high fever, low feeding, decreased milk production, very round lumps of one to five centimeters on the skin, sores inside the lips, mouth and nose, excessive amount of fluid coming from the eyes and nose, resin removal, and drying of lymph nodes.
According to the office, the disease is transmitted through transportation of infected cattle, community grazing areas and food and water eating areas, natural or artificial insemination. Mishra said vaccination, buying cattle from reliable sources, keeping the cowshed free from shrimp, mosquitoes and other insects, paying attention to cleanliness and using insect repellents as needed.
