$460 million fine against Trump overturned

Washington. Washington: A US court has overturned a $464 million civil sentence imposed on President Donald Trump on his personal property, saying he had fraudulently imposed a higher fine on his personal property.

Judge Arthur Ngoron ruled against Trump in February 2024, ordering him to pay $464 million in interest, while his sons Eric and Don Jr. were asked to pay more than $4 million each.

Judge Ngoron found that Trump and his company had illegally increased their assets and manipulated property prices to obtain favorable bank loans or insurance terms.

On Thursday, the Appeals Division of the Supreme Court of New York upheld the ruling, but ruled that the size of the fine was “excessive” and that it “violated the Eighth Amendment to the United States Constitution.”

State Attorney General Letitia James, who has filed a lawsuit against Trump, can now appeal to the State’s Supreme Court, the New York Court of Appeals.

After the initial ruling, Trump later claimed that he should get interest on an appeal trying to challenge the size and terms of the sentence along with the civil decision.

He has repeatedly denounced cases and punishments as politically motivated.
