China. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s Economic and Development Advisor Finance Minister Dr Yubaraj Khatiwada has made it clear that there was no agreement on Nepal’s support to China’s Global Security Initiative (GSI) during the bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Oli and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Former Finance Minister Dr Khatiwada, who was also present in the meeting, made it clear that the Government of Nepal, committed to nepal’s constitution and non-aligned foreign policy, would not be part of any country’s security strategy. Prime Minister Oli, who is in Tianjin, China, had a meeting with Chinese President Xi jinping on The sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Plus summit.
Asked about the chinese intention to support China’s GSI in a press release issued after the meeting, Dr Khatiwada said, “Prime Minister Oli’s visit is mainly for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Plus summit.” Generally, no agreement or understanding is signed in the sidelines of such conferences and has not been signed. It is completely wrong to propagate that Nepal has become a party to GSI on the issue of lack of consensus. ’
Dr Khatiwada shared that the two sides discussed the issue of priority for the implementation of agreements and agreements, including the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) signed earlier between the two countries. Stating that an agreement has been reached on GSI during the visit, he urged some media and social media outlets in Nepal to communicate only after understanding the reality.
According to Dr Khatiwada, discussions were held on expanding connectivity between Nepal and China, industrial and infrastructure development, cooperation in the health sector, agriculture, trade, tourism, investment, science and technology, sports, natural disaster management, people-to-people relations between the two countries and poverty alleviation. He said That China is always ready to help Nepal in its economic and social transformation.
During Prime Minister Oli’s previous official visit to China, Nepal and China had signed an agreement on the construction of tokha-Chhahare tunnel way, enhancing Nepal-China trade and export of buffalo meat to China in the presence of his Chinese counterpart Li Qiang.
