New Delhi. India will start producing commercial semiconductors by the end of 2025. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced his nation as a future global hub for chip innovation.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the annual ‘Semicon India Conference’ in New Delhi, Modi said the test chips of Micron and Tata have already been produced.
“Commercial chip production will start this year,” he said, adding that this shows how fast India is growing in the semiconductor sector. India’s semiconductor market stood at $38 billion in 2023. This has increased to $ 45 billion to $ 50 billion in 2024-2025. The government has set a target of $100 billion to $110 billion by 2030.
The country is currently developing 10 semiconductor projects at an investment of $18 billion, including two new 3-nanometer design facilities in Noida and Bengaluru.
“Even though our journey started late, no one can stop us now,” Modi said. India is said to have a special dominance in three areas – component manufacturing for semiconductor devices, supplying critical materials such as chemicals and minerals, and providing services ranging from artificial intelligence, big data and cloud computing.
The world’s most populous nation claims ‘human capital’ to be one of its greatest powers. According to Modi, India accounts for 20 per cent of the global talent in semiconductor design.
Modi’s announcement came after Japan promised to increase its investment in semiconductor and AI support to India to 1 trillion yen ($68 billion) during his visit to Tokyo last week. India, the world’s fifth-largest and fastest growing economy, is now hit by US President Donald Trump’s 50 per cent tax penalty and is looking for new avenues of development.
New Delhi: With supply concentrated in a handful of sectors even as international chip demand continues to grow, India said it is building a “complete ecosystem” that incorporates design, manufacturing and packaging with the aim of becoming “self-reliant and globally competitive”.
“Today’s India instills confidence in the world,” Modi said in a government briefing note this week. ’
