Bhojpur. Organic potato produced here has become a source of good income for the farmers of Bhojpur. Potatoes, which were used only for household purposes in the past, have started being exported in recent times due to road access.
Traders take vehicles to the farmers’ houses to buy potatoes. Shiva Kumar Bista, a local farmer of Temkemaiyung-5, said that organic potato has become a source of reliable income for farmers with the expansion of road access in the villages. “In the past, it was difficult to transport organic potatoes to other cities. ’
This year, farmers are selling Rs 40 to Rs 45 per kg from the village. Ram Bahadur Bista, a local farmer, said that there is good demand for organic potatoes in the market.
“Organic potatoes are produced in Majaule and Cholanti villages”, he said, adding, “All the people in the village are involved in potato farming”. The potatoes produced are sold at home. There is a good demand in the market as the potatoes of our region are organic. ’
A farmer of Majaule village has been producing 700 kg to 7,000 kg of potatoes. More than 85 households in the district have been involved in potato farming commercially, he said. Bhotange, Pankhadle, Dharane, Sailunge and other varieties of potatoes are mostly produced in this area.
According to Agriculture Knowledge Centre, 51,900 metric tonnes of potato was produced in Bhojpur district last year. Potato farming is done on 3,272 hectares of land here.
