Banks. A section of Bangkok’s road collapsed on Wednesday, leaving a huge pothole that disrupted traffic, damaged infrastructure and forced evacuations.
No casualties were reported, but three vehicles were damaged, Bangkok governor Chadchart Sitipunt said. He said it could have been linked to the construction of an underground railway station.
Video of the accident showed the road sinking, falling electric poles and bursting water pipes. Cars have been forced to retreat after the four-lane road was completely blocked. The edge of the ditch is blocked in front of the police station, exposing the underground structure.
It has been announced that the outpatient service (OPD) will be closed for two days at a nearby hospital. Although the structure of the building was not affected, people were evacuated from the police station and nearby houses.
Electricity and water supply to the area have also been cut off. Governor Chadchart said that repair work is being carried out immediately amidst the apprehension that heavy rain might cause further damage. Bangkok is currently in the monsoon season.
