More than 8,000 inmates return to jail, 6,500 still absent

Kathmandu. Of the total 14,549 prisoners who escaped from 28 prisons and nine correction centres across the country, 8,054 have returned to prisons so far. Of them, 7,713 escaped from prison and 341 escaped from correction centre, according to the Department of Prison Management.

According to Department Director Chomendra Neupane, some of them came on their own while some were arrested by the security personnel. According to him, 6,494 prisoners are still absconding. Of them, 5,872 escaped from prison and 622 escaped from correction centre. The search for them is underway, Neupane said.

On September 10, 13,585 prisoners escaped from prisons and 964 from correctional homes during the Zenji agitation. Meanwhile, 10 inmates have died. Of the total 30,646 prisoners, there are currently 23,446 prisoners.
