Kathmandu. Structures worth millions of rupees have been damaged due to floods in various rivers and streams of the country triggered by incessant rainfall on October 1 and 18.
Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Kulman Ghising, said that embankments eroded across 1,500 meters in different parts of the country have caused a loss of Rs 100 million. Kankai has breached around 200 meters of embankment along the lower bank of the Postal Highway in Gauriganj-2, Jhapa and inundated about 114 houses of Hoklabari village. Similarly, 500 hectares of paddy fields were damaged and a 200-meter embankment at Kuwadi of Jhapa Rural Municipality-2 was eroded, causing a loss of Rs 7.5 million.
Similarly, the Mechi River has inundated spurs at various places, 75 houses have been displaced due to inundation in the Keshaliya River of Biratnagar and around Rs 2.5 million has been damaged to the embankment at Pateruwa, Siraha-17 on the eastern bank of the Kamala River.
A 60-meter embankment on the right bank of the Lalbakaiya River was swept away and around 100 hectares of paddy fields were swept away and 200 hectares of paddy fields were swept away in Baudimai village of Rautahat. An embankment worth eight crore rupees has been damaged after the Rato River swept away an embankment in Mahottari.
Minister Ghising said that the head regulator, main canal and branch canal gates were opened on time to divert the flood in the dam area of the irrigation system to the river safely. The flooding of the Sunkoshi River has inundated the dam site under the Sunkoshi Marin Diversion Multipurpose Project.
