Rains and hailstorms damage banana farming

Sunsari. Banana farming in different parts of the district has been badly damaged due to the storm triggered by rainfall on Saturday and Sunday.

Banana farming in Inaruwa, Bhokraha and Harinagar, among other areas, has been badly damaged. Ayub Sahmiya of Bhokraha Narsingh Rural Municipality-2, who has been cultivating bananas for the past eight years, rented seven bigha of land and took a bank loan of Rs 600,000. His banana crop of 3 bigha and one kattha has been damaged.

He said that more than Rs 13 lakh has been damaged. According to Miya, the floods have caused a loss of Rs 10 lakh to Rs 25 lakh to banana farming.

Similarly, Birendra Thakur, a local, has also suffered a big loss to banana farming planted by him with an investment of one lakh katthas of land. Farmers who have been growing banana and other crops commercially in the district have been facing huge losses due to natural disasters.

According to Nilkamal Singh, chief of Agriculture Knowledge Centre, Sunsari, banana farming has been done in 530 hectares of land in the district this year. Singh said that the details of the damage caused by the floods in the agriculture sector are being collected.
