Jhapa. As many as 2,500 children have been affected by floods triggered by incessant rainfall in Jhapa district. Information Officer of the District Administration Office, Assistant Chief District Officer Tej Prakash Prasain said that 2,500 children of different parts of the district have been affected by the floods. “We are managing educational materials for the affected children”, he said, adding that the local levels concerned have been asked to manage books. ’
Of the 4,500 households affected by the floods following the incessant rainfall in the district, around 3,400 households are in Jhapa rural municipality, he said. Around 1,700 flood victims of Jhapa Rural Municipality-1 and 2 have been provided relief package since last year.
Along with providing relief to the flood victims, the details of the damage caused by agriculture, livestock and infrastructure are being collected. Teams from Mechi Provincial Hospital and Health Office have been mobilized in the affected areas to prevent the spread of natural diseases, Assistant CDO Prasain said.
It is said works are underway to purify water and install a clean drinking water tank for the control of water-borne diseases. Various individuals, social organisations and business houses have been extending their support for the relief distribution.
Assistant CDO Prasain said that food arrangements have been made so that around four thousand families can be distributed. “There is no shortage of food for relief distribution at present,” he said. ’
The District Disaster Management Committee has been distributing relief materials to the flood victims of the district through one-door system in collaboration with ‘One for One Campaign’. Mahendra Kumar Giri, coordinator of One for One Campaign, said that around 60 lakh rupees has already been received from various donors to provide relief to 2,000 families.
Each family will be provided with one sack of rice, one liter oil, two kilograms of salt, five kilograms of potatoes, two kilograms of lentils, one carton of water, two mats and two blankets.
Loss of 4 crores in Kankai

Meanwhile, the floods that occurred on October 3 have caused a loss of around Rs 40 million in Kankai municipality area of Jhapa. Municipality mayor Rajendra Kumar Pokharel said the floods caused loss of around Rs four million in the municipality. The flood in the Kankai Mai River has eroded about 25 bighas of land and damaged about 800 meters of road.
“The municipality has constructed embankments along the Kankai and Biring rivers to control the river, which has prevented much damage,” said Mayor Pokharel, adding, “Around 50 households have been affected by the floods in the municipality.” Stating that relief distribution works are being carried out in collaboration with various social organisations, he said relief programmes would be brought immediately after taking decision from the executive meeting.
