Kanchanpur. A modern integrated waste management centre has come into operation at Shuklaphanta municipality.

}The waste generated in the market and rural areas is collected and brought to the center. The sanitation workers at the centre segregate biodegradable, non-biodegradable and recyclable waste. After segregating the waste collected at the center, compost is produced from the biodegradable waste and the recyclable waste is sold in the scrap. The waste management centre constructed at the cost of Rs 302.5 million is spread over 3.9 hectares of land.

Engineer at the Integrated Waste Management Centre, Jayanta Bhatta, said that the centre has a capacity of around TAG_OPEN_div_24 6 metric tons, and is currently collecting 2 to 3 metric tons of waste on a daily basis. “It is not only a waste management centre but also a processing centre, where the waste coming from the market is segregated,” said Bhatta, adding, “A small amount of waste is put in cells and buried with soil, which does not affect the environment.” ’

He said that in the morning, the garbage collection vehicle will roam the urban and rural areas of the city and collect the garbage.TAG_OPEN_div_22 Engineer Bhatta said that there is a plan to segregate biodegradable, non-degradable and reusable waste at the center and produce compost from the degradable waste and sell it. This has not only helped in keeping the environment clean and proper waste management but has also created employment opportunities for the locals.

Site in-charge of construction company Raman KS JV, Uddhav Singh Saud, said that the garbage management center has been brought into operation since last August after the completion of the construction work.TAG_OPEN_div_20 “Every morning we collect garbage from the market and it is recycled,” he said, adding, “We segregate the required waste and collect the waste in the cell.” ’

There are 10 garbage collection facilities at the Waste Management Center. Eight sanitation workers have been hired. The Integrated Waste Management Centre was constructed with the financial assistance of the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The contract was signed with Raman KS JV Dhangadhi on Baisakh 25, 2079. Although the Waste Management Centre has a capacity of six metric tons, it is now collecting only half of its daily capacity.

The Integrated Waste Management Center is the first of its kind in Kanchanpur.TAG_OPEN_div_16 Likewise, preparations were underway to construct a waste management centre at Bhimdutta, but the project was withdrawn due to lack of space for it. The project was withdrawn after the locals protested against the construction of the waste management center, saying it would pollute the environment.

The waste management center is used to make compost from the degradable waste and process non-degradable but recyclable materials, which has become a source of income at the local level to reduce environmental pollution.
