Kathmandu. Kathmandu: Drinking water from Melamchi Hydropower Project has been brought to Kathmandu. The water that was stopped from June 26 last year was brought to Kathmandu after repairs citing that the water project would suffer due to floods and landslides in the Melamchi River during the rainy season.
Executive Director of Melamchi Drinking Water Development Committee, Jagarnath Das said that the water collection and processing centre at Sundarijal is receiving over 170 million liters of water on a daily basis.
“We have been able to bring the water from the Melamchi project to Kathmandu after carrying out repairs at the place damaged by the monsoon and reducing the water flow,” he said. More than 17 crore liters of water is being supplied to Sundarijal every day. ’
The Kathmandu Valley has a daily demand of 430 million liters of water. Only 13 to 140 million litres of water was supplied to Kathmandu Valley daily from various sources when the Melamchi drinking water was blocked.
Ashok Kumar Poudel, executive director of Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited (KUKL), said that more than 170 million liters of Melamchi drinking water has reached Sundarijal every day.
“We have started the process of distributing water after receiving more than 170 million liters of water daily from Melamchi,” he said. In the past, water used to be available in taps only for one day in 6 days. ’
The Melamchi water is being supplied to the Kathmandu Valley only in winter after the project’s headworks were completely damaged by floods and landslides in the Melamchi River on June 15, 2078 BS.
According to Das, 60 to 70 million liters of water is being transferred daily from the Ribarma River to Kathmandu after the Melamchi water source was closed due to floods. According to him, 170 million liters of water was distributed daily in the Kathmandu Valley on March 29, 2021 at full capacity.
Water has not been supplied to Kathmandu for a whole month after the floods in Melamchi and Indrawati rivers in June and July of the same year caused huge damages to the project.
