77 families at risk of landslides in Sunapati in Ramechhap

Monthly. As many as 77 families in Sunapati Rural Municipality of Ramechhap district are at high risk of landslides. Residents of four toles of ward no. 3 of the municipality are at risk of landslide. The victims have demanded that the entire settlement be shifted to a safer place immediately after the landslide swept the entire settlement.

Residents of Keureni, Saune, Nagasiwa and Chyamdung tole of Sunapati-3 are at risk of being displaced. The settlement which has been witnessing minor landslide since long is at risk due to incessant rainfall on October 1, 18 and 19.

Some houses have collapsed after the landslide pulled the settlement down, while many of the houses were on the verge of collapse. However, the landslide has not stopped even after two days of the rain stopping. The settlements are shifting day by day due to landslides. Vice-chairperson of Sunapati rural municipality Gita Bista said works have been underway to relocate the people at risk of flooding to safer places and they are also preparing to provide some relief amount.

As the houses are being swept away by the Khani River every day, the victims have demanded that the government immediately provide them shelter in safe places. Sita Khadka, a local victim, said that the settlement should be shifted to a safer place for the locals as it is not possible to live in such a safe place.

Although the rural municipality has urged the residents of the landslide area not to stay at the place at night, the victims are compelled to stay there as there is no place to stay. Min Bahadur Khatri, a local victim, said the place was listed as the landslide-prone zone in 2035 BS. At that time, some of the residents were shifted to other places, but later they were resettled there. Rose Thing, one of the victims, said that she is no longer able to live in this place, but she has her own private land in this place to move elsewhere.

Suresh Kumar Shrestha, chief administrative officer of Sunapati-3, said that a committee has been formed under the leadership of ward chair of Sunapati-3 Kul Bahadur Thing to identify the victims.

There is a huge loss of life and property if the government fails to provide immediate relief to the people of the landslide-prone areas and make arrangements for their permanent rehabilitation by relocating them to other places to save their lives.
