Hong Kong. Two people were killed when a cargo plane skidded off the runway and plunged into the sea while landing at Hong Kong International Airport on Monday morning.
The Boeing 747 operated by Turkey’s ACT Airlines was flying from Dubai to Hong Kong. Four crew members were rescued and taken to hospital. According to the police, two people were killed in the vehicle on the ground of the airport.
The aircraft was leased from Emirates Airlines, with crew, maintenance and insurance all provided by Emirates. There was no luggage on the plane. Footage released by local media showed the front of the plane above the water, but the rear was submerged in the sea. It is suspected that the tail part is broken.
The accident took place on the north runway, which is now closed. Regular flights are operating from the remaining two runways. The Hong Kong Civil Aviation Authority said it had launched an investigation into the incident. Emirates said it was cooperating with all parties following the incident.
