He said that the scriptures have instructed to worship the Sun on Kartik Shukla Shashti, also known as Surya Shashti.
On this occasion, married men and women pray for the long life of their husbands and wives and for the unmarried ones to get a suitable groom and bride. There are also a large number of people who celebrate this festival with the desire to have children. Many devotees believe that this fast fulfills their wishes.
The festival of worship, worship and worship of the Sun God has started from Saturday. On Chaturthi, one takes a bath and eats pure food. From this day, it is customary for the people to not eat fish, meat, garlic, millet, buckwheat, lentils, etc. until the end of Chhath. The festival concludes on the occasion of Kartik Shukla Saptami, i.e. this morning, after offering prayers to the rising sun.
Especially women observe a strict fast on Chhath in the belief that their wishes will be fulfilled. Mainly celebrated in the Terai, Chhath based on the Mithila culture has been celebrated in the hilly areas including Kathmandu after 2046 BS. The Chhath festival has started in Kathmandu after the Shree Chhath Puja Committee was formally registered at the District Administration Office in 2062 BS with the address of Guheshwori and Gaurighat.
After 2063 BS, the festival was also celebrated with special significance at Thapathali, Gaurighat and Ranipokhari in Kathmandu. However, Chhath festival has stopped in Ranipokhari after the earthquake of April 25, 2015. Lately, Chhath has been celebrated in a grand manner in Kamalpokhari.
The Chhath ghats built at Guheshwori, Kamalpokhari, Thapathali and other places were decorated like a bride on Monday. This year’s Chhath festival was celebrated at these places by offering prayers to the rising sun, said Anil Singh, chairperson of the Chhath Committee, Guheshwori. Just like the setting sun on Monday evening, only the devotees went to the Chhath Ghat in the capital this morning to pay obeisance to the rising sun. Chairman of the Chhath Puja Committee, Singh, said that many people stayed awake throughout the night at Guheshwori Gaurighat area.
There is a religious belief that first of all, Chhath Mata has started celebrating this festival by pleasing the Sun God. During the Mahabharata period, Draupadi and the Pandavas worshiped the Sun God to succeed while living in exile. It is said that this festival has been started in the belief that due to the effect of Surya Puja performed by the Pandavas in the palace of King Virat of Mithila, the unknown was successful.
According to the Surya Purana, Anusuya, the wife of Atri Muni, was the first to observe the Chhath fast. As a result, she inherited unwavering good fortune and her husband’s love. It is believed that the tradition of celebrating Chhath started from that time.
