Floods and landslides in Ilam estimated at Rs 11.81 billion

Ilam. The floods and landslides triggered by the unprecedented rainfall on October 3 have caused damages worth Rs 11.81 billion in Ilam. According to Chief District Officer Sunita Nepal, various roads, bridges, buildings, drinking water, irrigation, livestock and agriculture related areas in Ilam amounted to Rs 11.81 billion.

CDO Nepal said that the damage was collected from 11 thematic offices including the Road Division, Infrastructure Development Office, Nepal Electricity Authority, Water Resources and Irrigation Division by the District Administration Office.

The floods and landslides caused damages worth Rs 6.96 billion in 11 different projects under the Road Division. According to the NRDO, 62 roads have been damaged worth Rs 2.34 billion, 25 bridges have been damaged to Rs 850 million and six buildings have been damaged to Rs 40 million.

According to the District Administration Office, HT lines, LT lines and transformers of five hydropower projects under the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) have suffered damages worth Rs 24.7 million. Similarly, 16 river control projects under the Water Resources and Irrigation Development Division suffered damages worth Rs 134.66 million, five landslide control projects amounted to Rs 177.12 million and 72 irrigation projects.

Similarly, 2,520 livestock under the Veterinary Hospital and Livestock Service Expert Centre suffered damages worth Rs 23.55 million while 244 cowsheds and ponds suffered damages worth Rs 19.754 million. According to CDO Nepal, 29 drinking water projects under the Department of Water Supply and Sewage Management, Dhankuta Field Unit Office have suffered a loss of Rs 287.5 million while 223 projects under the Drinking Water and Sanitation Division Office Bhadrapur, Jhapa have suffered a loss of Rs 280.1 million.

Similarly, 3,409 farmers planted food and cash crops in 892.32 hectares of land under the Agriculture Knowledge Centre and 25 tea gardens under the National Tea and Coffee Development Board have suffered a loss of Rs 47.55 million.

Landslides have caused damages worth Rs 329.016 million in 10 optical fibres and cable projects under Nepal Telecom and 31 projects under Irrigation and Water Resources Management Project in Jhapa.

CDO Nepal said that the details of the loss have been sent to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, the Ministry of Home Affairs and the concerned ministries. “The preliminary details of the loss have been collected from the thematic offices in the district with the coordination and facilitation of the local levels”, CDO Nepal said, adding, “We have forwarded the details of the loss to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, the Ministry of Home Affairs and the concerned line ministries.” ’

As many as 39 people were killed and 26 injured in floods and landslides in Ilam. One person is still missing. As many as 711 households have been displaced due to floods and landslides in the district. Of them, 700 families are staying at their relatives’ houses while 11 families are staying at community buildings, according to the district administration. The floods and landslides had completely damaged 365 houses and partially damaged 940 houses in 10 local levels of the district.
