4 killed, 3 crew members injured as US cargo plane crashes shortly after take-off

Washington. USPS Flight 2976 crashed in Louisville, Kentucky, at 5:15 p.m. local time on Tuesday. According to CNN, 4 people were killed in the accident, including three crew members.

The plane had taken off from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport bound for Honolulu, Hawaii. Shortly after take-off, the plane caught fire in its wing. Moments after the fan caught fire, the plane exploded in a place where there were industrial buildings.

The fire also broke out in the structures, the international news agency Reuters reported. Louisville Mayor Greenberg said on social media that at least 19 people on the ground were injured.

Apart from the three crew members, the other person who died was a local of the area. Some of the injured are in critical condition and the death toll might rise.

People have been advised to stay safe within 8 miles [8 km] of the crash site. According to the BBC, the cargo ship was carrying 38,000 gallons of fuel. The fuel is said to be about 1,44,000 litres.

The plane was a 34-year-old MD-11 freighter. The aircraft was manufactured by McDonnell Douglas.
