Nuwakot. The disposal of garbage at Bancharedanda has been affected again from today due to obstruction by the locals.

Vehicles carrying garbage from the Kathmandu Valley were sent back to Kathmandu following obstruction by the locals demanding implementation of past agreements reached at Kakani of Nuwakot and Bancharedanda of Dhunabesi, Dhading.

Locals had announced an indefinite shutdown in the third week of November, demanding implementation of past agreements including making the waste disposal scientifically systematic. Niranjan Sanjel, a local of Dhunabesi municipality-1, said that the work has been disrupted again from November 2 citing that the commitment made by Minister for Urban Development Kulman Ghising, who reached the affected areas on November 30 to take the agreement towards implementation phase.

According to him, the minister’s verbal commitment to implement the agreements reached in the past had to be obstructed as the progress made during the period of ‘starting work within 15 days’ was not productive. “Although the 18-point agreement reached in the past regarding the management of waste at the Sisdol-Bancharedanda-Kundu landfill area in the past will be implemented within 15 days, the work has not started yet,” Sanjel said, adding, “We have demanded that the work be started with written commitment now.” ”

Locals of Kakani rural municipality-1, 2 and 3 and Dhunabesi municipality-1 and 3 have obstructed the movement of vehicles that have reached the road at Dhande, the border of the two districts. They demanded implementation of the 18-point agreement reached with Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balendra Shah and a team on June 9, 2022.

As per the agreement, the demands such as disposal of garbage would be carried out only at night, making arrangements to prevent foul smell, not to leak litchhad from vehicles carrying garbage, and scientific management to prevent waste from going to the Lichhad river after disposal would be fulfilled in a phased manner as per the agreement.

Locals have complained that the non-implementation of the agreement has hampered the daily life of the infected people by spreading foul smell from the garbage in the affected areas. Hundreds of locals have been demonstrating peacefully on the roads of Sisdole, Kundule and Dhande, demanding that the responsible representatives should come to the affected areas with a written commitment at the ministerial level to address their demands and implement the agreement.

The people’s representatives and political parties from Kakani and Belkotgadhi of Nuwakot and Dhunbesi of Dhading have expressed their support to the demands put forth by the locals.
