31 killed, 14 missing in Sri Lanka landslides

Kathmandu. At least 31 people were killed and 14 others missing in the landslides triggered by heavy rains and landslides in Sri Lanka on Thursday, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said Thursday. According to the center, thousands of people have been displaced due to floods.

According to the latest report of the DMC centre, the extreme weather has affected 17 districts and affected around 4,000 people from 1,158 households. The DMC said 10 people were injured, three houses completely destroyed and 381 houses partially damaged and at least 131 people were shifted to temporary shelters.

According to the DMC, the highest number of 18 people died in Badulla district, followed by seven in Kegale and four in Nuwara Eliya district. Similarly, one person each died in Hambantota and Kurunegala. Officials have warned that the incessant rain could lead to further flooding and landslides in central and hilly areas.

The Department of Examinations has announced the postponement of university examinations scheduled for Thursday, Friday and Saturday due to deteriorating weather conditions. Heavy rains have disrupted transport in several districts and blocked major roads.

Emergency teams have continued search and rescue operations in high-risk areas, while the government has urged people to remain vigilant for landslides and rising water levels.
