Nepal-Bangladesh secretary-level meeting signs six-point agreement: Bangladesh to purchase additional power and initiate investment process in Sunkoshi-3

Kathmandu. The Nepal-Bangladesh secretary-level meeting has concluded.

In the meeting, Nepal and Bangladesh have agreed on 6 issues including electricity trade, construction and development of hydropower projects, construction and management of inter-country transmission lines.

Bangladesh has agreed to import additional 20 MW of power in addition to the 40 megawatts electricity it has been importing from Nepal after completing the required process, Bangladesh will form an expert committee for project evaluation to take forward the investment process of Sunkoshi-3 hydropower project and finalize the JVA soon.

According to the agreement, Bangladesh will sign a memorandum of understanding regarding the export of electricity from Nepal through transmission lines from India to Barapukkarya, Panchagadh-Thakurgaun, Bheramara and Comilla of Bangladesh, renewable energy and promotion of energy efficiency after completing their respective internal processes.

Both sides agreed to jointly seek India’s consent on the MoU on starting capacity building programme between Nepal and Bangladesh, to conduct capacity building programme in Kathmandu of the first phase for the Bangladeshi side and subsequently in Bangladesh for the Nepali side and to jointly seek India’s consent for cooperation in the energy sector between Nepal, India and Bangladesh.

In the 7th meeting of the Nepal-Bangladesh Energy Secretary-level Joint Directive Committee, Secretary at the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Chiranjivi Chataut and Secretary of the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources of People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Farjana Mamtaj, were from the Nepali side.
