Minister Kharel inspects Ncell office damaged by Genji agitation

Kathmandu. Minister for Communications and Information Technology Jagadish Kharel inspected the Ncell office at Nakkhu today.

On the occasion, Ncell Chairman Satish Lal Acharya and CEO Michael Foley briefed the minister about the losses incurred during the movement.

Ncell has been providing its services from its Nakkhu-based office after it was vandalized, looted and set ablaze during the Genji agitation on September 10. According to Ncell, the loss of approximately Rs 65 crore was caused due to vandalism and arson in different parts of the country during the Zenji movement.

After the inspection, Minister Kharel said that he had come to inquire about the loss caused by Ncell. He also said that he is glad to hear that Ncell is bringing a ‘pack’ targeting Genji.

“I had told them to do something for the students and Jenji, they said they would bring a new package, besides sharing their plan to increase telecom access at the Everest Base Camp and some remote places,” Minister Kharel said. Stating that Ncell has suffered a big loss, he also said that they are ready to provide any support from the government.

Ncell is also preparing to launch a GenG pack and announce GenG scholarships worth Rs 10 million to 100 students across the country. On behalf of Ncell, Minister Kharel was informed that the company was expanding its 4G service by adding five more towers up to Gokharsep of Sagarmatha area.

On the occasion, Minister Kharel said that the government was effortful to resolve some problems seen with Ncell of late. “There are policy-level problems and disputes as well, although the government is confident that all these should be resolved in accordance with the law,” he said.

Chief Executive Officer of Ncell Michael Foley said that the services of Nepal’s telecom sector are not of international standard and the government should facilitate in a policy level. “Telecommunication service has become an essential element for the people in recent period, so the government should also pay attention on this issue,” he said.
