Jenji agitation and floods: Insurance companies claim more than Rs 27 billion

. The Insurance Authority of Nepal (NIA) has made public the insurance claim details of the damage caused by the ‘Genji’ agitation and the floods and landslides last September. According to the data made public by NEA, claims of more than Rs 27 billion have been made to non-life insurance companies due to floods, landslides and Genji agitation.

According to the authority, a large amount of claims have been made to the insurance companies due to the physical and other damages caused during the recent ‘GenG’ agitation.TAG_OPEN_div_14 A total of 3,300 claims have been filed for structures and vehicles damaged during the agitation. The total amount of these claims is Rs 23.44 billion. Out of this, the insurance companies have so far paid Rs 4.38 billion to the insured including advance payment.

So far, 781 preliminary claims have been received from the flood and landslide victims, with a total amount of around Rs 4.04 billion.

Flood claim payment has been slow. Of the claims of over Rs 4 billion, only 67 have been settled so far and Rs 18.8 million has been paid, according to the NEA. The highest number of property insurance claims amounting to Rs 3.45 billion have been filed in floods and landslides with 410 claims.

Nepal Reinsurance Company has also shown readiness to pay the claim for the damages caused by the ‘Genji’ movement.TAG_OPEN_div_8 According to the press release, the company has paid Rs 2.56 billion in advance to the non-life insurance companies. Nepal Reinsurance Company has received 2,861 claims worth Rs 15.81 billion from 14 non-life insurance companies.
