Kathmandu. KATHMANDU: Balendra Shah (Balen), Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, is set to step down from his post by mid-January.
He is resigning from his post after agreeing to be the party’s prime ministerial candidate in the House of Representatives election scheduled for March 4.
As per the agreement reached between Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RSP) President Rabi Lamichhane and Shah this morning, Shah will become the Prime Minister if he wins the election. Similarly, Lamichhane will continue to be the president of the RSP. Shah is leaving the metropolis as soon as he is projected as the candidate for the next prime minister.
There is no preparation to resign for that yet. He is preparing to pass the issues submitted to the municipal assembly and executive before resigning.
Sources said that the metropolis is preparing to leave the works taken forward by the mayor in the current state without any legal confusion. Shah’s tenure in the metropolis is still around 16 months away.
