11 arrested for duping people of more than Rs 120 million through SMC app

Kathmandu. Police have arrested a gang involved in online scamming through SMC mobile application.

Nepal Police’s Cyber Bureau has arrested 11 persons including a Chinese national on the charge of fraud. According to the Bureau Spokesperson, Deepak Raj Awasthi, a gang involved in the fraud network of around 70,000 Nepalis under the cover of SMCN Advertising Service Center Pvt Ltd has been arrested in Khairahani Municipality-6 of Chitwan.

He Xiangjiang, 37, a Chinese national, has been arrested. He was arrested from Hotel The Universal in Thahiti, Kathmandu.

All the others arrested are Nepalis. The deceased have been identified as Milan Shrestha of Ramechhap, Saugat Thapa of Tanahun, Bir Bahadur Tamang of Nuwakot, Sonam Khatun of Chitwan, Priya KC of Tokha, Monika Gurung of Gulmi and Gita Gurung of Dhading.

The bureau had received 255 complaints of fraud. According to the complaint, Rs 12,08,16,372 was cheated. According to the police, the gang had been duping SMCN Advertising Service Company by giving false assurances that it was registered with the registrar’s office.

This group used to make false promises of getting paid for the advertisements of the world’s famous film companies (Universal, Warner Bros. and Disney).
