Supreme Court seeks written response on writ petition seeking reservation quota for Nishad community

Kathmandu. The Supreme Court (SC) has sought a written response on a writ petition filed demanding the determination of reservation quota for the Nishad community.

A single bench of Justice Til Prasad Shrestha conducted the preliminary hearing and asked the Office of Attorney General to submit a written response along with reasonable grounds, reasons and evidence within 15 days from the date of receipt of the notice.

The apex court has sought a written response on the writ petition filed by Treasurer Mahato Naniya on behalf of Nepal Nishad Ekta Samaj on January 3, naming the Federal Parliament, Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers as the defendants.

The Nishad caste includes Nuniya, Bin, Malah, Kewat, Kewarat, Turaha, Amat, Kol÷Kaul, Kahar, Khulwat, Khulwat÷Khunot, Gangai, God, Godhi, C÷hai÷Chai, Chauhan, Tiyar, Dhimar-Dhiwar, Wahardar, Veldar, Vote, Rajbhar, Sorahiya-Soraiya, Vanpar, Gaud, Bote, Modiari-Moriyari.

The writ petitioners have sought an order to determine the reservation quota in the civil service, government, semi-government, non-governmental, military, police administration and diplomatic bodies as they have been left behind by the state mechanism.

The Nishad ethnic group is mainly found in the settlements along the canals, streams and streams in every district of Madhes (Terai). The main occupations of this tribe are fishing, boating, farming, and wage labour.

These communities are affected by floods and landslides. According to the Status Report of the Madhesi community in Nepal, there are more than 814,216 people of the Nishad community.
