SEBON and Regulatory Commission hold 2-hour discussion on regulating hydropower sector

Kathmandu. The Securities Board of Nepal (SEBON) and the Electricity Regulatory Commission (ERC) on Thursday held a joint meeting to strengthen and systematize the capital market of Nepal and the sectors related to power generation.

The meeting was focused on promoting investment in power generation projects through capital market, regulatory coordination and maintaining policy-level coordination.

Representatives of both the bodies agreed that there was a need to stop the anomalies seen in the issuance of transparent, right shares of one title and investment beyond the intended purpose for the mobilization of sustainable financial resources, and an effective and investor-friendly mechanism for the public issue of hydropower companies.

Commission Chairperson Dr Poudel said that continuous collaboration, information exchange and joint initiatives would be carried out more effectively with the objective of enhancing the confidence in the market, expanding investment opportunities and contributing to the overall development and stability of Nepal’s capital market and power related sector. Ram Prasad Dhital said.

The meeting also held a 2-hour discussion on forming a joint taskforce comprising representatives of both bodies to make the relations between capital market and power sector more institutionalized and effective.

The task force will aim to identify concrete measures to collaborate on investment policy issues, regulatory coordination, and further revision of existing rules and regulations.

In the meeting, Chairman of the Commission, Dr. Ram Prasad Dhital, Member Dr. Board Chairman Santosh Narayan Shrestha, Executive Directors Binay Dev Acharya, Muktinath Shrestha and Rupesh KC were present in the meeting.
