Kagbeni-Muktinath road obstructed due to snowfall resumes

Kathmandu. The Kagbeni-Muktinath road, which has been obstructed since Wednesday due to heavy snowfall, has been reopened since this morning. The obstructed road has been brought into operation at the initiative of the District Administration Office and Baragung Mukti Chhetra Rural Municipality.

The 12-km road leading to Muktinath was completely obstructed due to heavy snowfall on Tuesday night. Excavators of the Muktinath (Jomsom-Korala) road project have been mobilized at the request of the District Administration Office and the Waragung Mukti Chhetra Rural Municipality.

A joint security team comprising Chief District Officer Ajita Sharma, Nepal Army, Armed Police Force and Nepal Police has been mobilized to clear the snow along the Muktinath road. Likewise, local people’s representatives including Vice-chair Diki Gurung and Ward Chair Karmgyacho Gurung were mobilized to clear the obstructed road.

A team of the District Security Committee along with local people’s representatives has been mobilized to resume the road obstructed due to heavy snowfall, said Police Inspector Santosh Basyal, Information Officer at the District Police Office.

According to him, even though the obstructed road has been opened, it is difficult for two-wheelers and heavy vehicles to climb up Muktinath as some of the snow has accumulated like stones in the wet place where there is no sunlight. The District Police Office has urged the public to ply vehicles only after 11:00 am as it would be difficult to travel to and from Muktinath in the morning.

Vehicles stranded at Kagbeni in Mustang have left for their destinations with the resumption of the Muktinath road, which was disrupted due to heavy snowfall since Wednesday. Baragung Mukti Chhetra-4 ward chair Karmaghyacho Gurung said the Muktinath road would be easier in some days if the snowfall does not occur again.
