. Martyrs’ Day is being observed across the country today by organizing various programmes. This day is celebrated commemorating the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the welfare of the country and people.
In commemoration of Dharma Bhakta Mathema, Dasharath Chandra Thakur, Gangalal Shrestha and Shukraraj Shastri who sacrificed their lives for the establishment of democracy in Nepal, this day is observed in commemoration of martyrdom.
The then government had sentenced them to death for raising voice against the Rana regime. With the sacrifice of these martyrs and the inspiration derived from them, the Rana regime was ended and democracy was established in Nepal.
Martyrs Day is observed every year on Magh 16 in memory of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the establishment and reinstatement of democracy and freedom of different eras.
Various programmes have been being organised to mark the Martyrs Week from January 26 to January 29. The Martyrs Day is observed on January 30 every year under the coordination of the then Kathmandu municipality since 2012 BS.
Demanding independence in 1997 BS, martyr Shukraraj Shastri was executed in Pachali of Teku, Kathmandu on January 26, Dharma Bhakta Mathema was executed in Sifal on January 26 and Ganga Lal Shrestha and Dasharath Chand were hanged by the Rana regime on January 29 at Shova Bhagawati.
