Kathmandu. Incumbent Vice President of Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA), Robin Sherchan, has announced his candidacy for the post of President of International Coordination Council (ICC) for the term of 2025-27.
Releasing a 15-point commitment letter with the slogan ‘Strong Organization, Strong Unity: Our Campaign’, he presented his claim amidst a special function organized in Tokyo, Japan on Sunday. Targeting the 12th World Conference of the Association to be held in Kathmandu in March, Sherchan has made the division and strengthening of the organization his main agenda.
Sherchan, who has been making Japan his workplace, has been working in various responsibilities of the Association for the past 15 years. In his commitment letter, he acknowledged that the NRNA has been going through a very difficult and challenging time for the past few years and added that it would be his primary responsibility to reunify the organization.
Putting forward the concept of ‘one mind, one organization’, he resolved to bring all under one roof by ending the internal strife and strife in the organization forever.
The issue of citizenship and voting rights of Non-Resident Nepalese has got special priority in Sherchan’s candidacy. He also announced that he would take decisive initiatives to remove the complexities seen in the implementation of the non-resident Nepali citizenship guaranteed by the constitution and to make arrangements for voting rights to the Nepalis living abroad. He also pledged to coordinate with the government and the Election Commission to ensure the rights of Nepalis living abroad to vote, especially as per the Supreme Court’s mandamus order.
He also raised the issue of equal pension and rights for ex-Gurkhas who have been oppressed for nearly 200 years. Sherchan plans to play an effective role on behalf of NRNA to bring the ongoing G2G talks with the UK government to a logical conclusion. He also said that the ‘Labour Desk’ would be made more effective to address the rights and welfare of the migrant workers, their involvement in the social security fund, and to address the insecurity at the workplace.
On the economic agenda, Sherchan proposed to increase the NRNA Development Fund to Rs 25 billion and include small investors and create an environment for foreign employment workers to connect through IPOs. He also pledged to lobby for necessary legal reforms to attract foreign investment in Nepal and ensure security of NRNs investment.
Sherchan has promised to correct the flaws in the statute and make the electoral system transparent and free of disputes for institutional reforms. He plans to make drastic changes in the membership distribution and electoral system by holding a statute convention within 6 months of his election. Sherchan, who is known for his ‘less talk but shows results of work’, expressed confidence that his experience and coordinating role with all sides would take NRNA to a new height.
The NRN cards to the Nepali community of Nepali origin residing in Thailand, Myanmar and other countries for many generations and connecting them with Nepal have also included in his action plan.
He urged all the campaigners to bring him to the leadership and said he would work for the greater interest of the organization. NRNA President Mahesh Shrestha and other NRNA campaigners from all over the world extended best wishes to Sherchan.
