Iran opens door to talks with US

Kathmandu. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Saturday reiterated Tehran’s position on talks. He said he kept the door open for talks with the US and hoped it would start soon.

Iran has also warned that it is ready to deal with any other situation. In an interview with Al Jazeera network, Araghchi told Oman on Friday that there was no compromise on Iran’s missile programme, according to an excerpt published on his official Telegram channel.

He warned Tehran that if the US attacked Iranian soil, Tehran would target US bases in the region. Araghchi said the indirect talks took place in Muscat but “also met with the US delegation”.

He said the talks had been a “good start” but it would take time to build trust. He said talks would resume “soon”. U.S. President Donald Trump described the talks on Friday as a “very positive” atmosphere. He promised to hold another round of talks next week.

However, he signed an executive order that will take effect on Saturday, saying that additional “tariffs” will be imposed on countries that are still doing business with Iran. The United States has announced new sanctions on several ships and ships aimed at curbing Iran’s oil exports.

According to World Trade Organization data, more than a quarter of Iran’s trade is with China, including $18 billion in imports and $14.5 billion in exports in 2024.

“Nuclear enrichment is Iran’s indispensable right and must continue,” Araghchi told Al Jazeera. “We are ready to sign an agreement that will be reassuring for promotion,” he said. “The only way to resolve Iran’s nuclear issue is through negotiations,” he added.

He also said Iran’s missile programme was “never compromised”. He said the missile programme was related to “the sovereign defence of the country”.

Washington has sought to address issues such as Iran’s ballistic missile program and its support for militant groups in the region, issues that Israel has insisted include in the talks. Tehran has repeatedly refused to expand the scope of the talks beyond the nuclear issue.
