NCP aims to generate 40,000 megawatts of electricity

Kathmandu. KATHMANDU: The Communist Party of Nepal (CPN) has pledged to produce 10,000 megawatts of electricity within next five years. The commitment paper made public at the party office at Parisdanda today has set a target to increase the capacity of the national grid to 15,000 MW within next five years.

Likewise, the CPN has set a long-term target of producing 40,000 MW of electricity by 2,100 AD and has set a target of declaring a country using 100 percent green energy. The party has given special priority to the development of the energy sector with the commitment to significantly increase the renewable energy mix.

Commitments made in the energy sector:

· The per capita consumption of electricity will be increased to 750 kilowatt hours in the next five years.

· Initiatives would be taken to increase domestic and foreign investment in hydropower sector to achieve the long-term goal of generating 40,000 megawatts of electricity by 2100 BS.

· Power purchase agreements of new projects will be opened and arrangements will be made for private sector companies to sign such agreements.

· In the next five years, 10,000 MW will be added and the capacity of the national system will be increased to 15,000 MW.

· Agreements with India and Bangladesh will be made effective to ensure electricity export.

· The renewable energy mix will be increased by promoting renewable energy (solar, wind, micro/small hydropower).

· A sustainable development model will be adopted ensuring the environmental and social security of hydropower projects.

· To take necessary actions for declaring the country as an energy-friendly country with the goal of using green energy.

· Policy and legal reforms will be made to increase domestic and foreign investment in the energy sector.

Rural and Urban Development

· Modern services and facilities will be provided to the settlements of villages and towns by eliminating unsystematic settlements.

· Effective projects will be implemented to make 20 selected cities into smart cities and 100 rural settlements into smart villages within the next five years.

· Clean drinking water will be provided to every household within the next 5 years.

· Under the concept of ‘one family, one dwelling unit’, five lakh new housing units will be constructed in five years with the investment of the government and private sector.
