. KARACHI: At least nine people were killed and more than 20 others injured on Sunday when pro-Iran protesters stormed the US consulate in Pakistan’s financial hub of Karachi, officials said.

The incident has suddenly deteriorated the security situation in the city. Hundreds of young protesters climbed over the main gate of the consulate and entered the driveway of the consular building, AFP journalists reported.

Some windows were broken and security forces fired tear gas to disperse the crowd.TAG_OPEN_div_16 Videos posted on social media showed American flags flying high with windows smashed through the main consulate building and barbed wire fenced off.

“We have to stay united, no force can stop us,” said a young protester at the scene.TAG_OPEN_div_14 Another said: “We are setting fire to the US consulate in Karachi, God willing, we will avenge the murder of our leader.” However, it has not been confirmed that the arson attempt was completely successful.

Meanwhile, thousands of people have taken to the streets in the eastern city of Lahore and northern Skardu.TAG_OPEN_div_12 More demonstrations are expected in the afternoon at the diplomatic area where the U.S. Embassy is in the capital, Islamabad, is located. The anger that has spread in different parts of the country has put the security agencies on high alert.

Analysts have linked this incident to regional political tensions. Such a reaction appears to pose a serious security challenge, especially after the recent conflict in Iran-US-Israel relations. The demonstrations and attempted attacks have once again underscored the need for greater vigilance and emergency preparedness at foreign embassies in Pakistan.
