Kathmandu. The United Nations has warned that the global hunger crisis is at risk of worsening due to the escalating conflict in the Middle East.
The World Food Programme (WFP) has predicted that the number of people facing acute food shortages could hit a new record by 2026. It is estimated that an additional 45 million people could face food insecurity if the conflict prolongs.
According to experts, the blockade in the Strait of Hormuz has not only affected oil shipments but also the movement of ships carrying fertilizer, which is directly affecting food production.
The UN said it had stepped up efforts to provide food, water, shelter and health services to the affected areas. In Lebanon, millions of people have been provided with hot food, necessities, and clean water.
Meanwhile, more than 1 million people have been forced to flee their homes due to displacement, including nearly 300,000 children. Most of those affected are forced to stay outside public shelters.
The health sector has also been severely affected. The attacks have killed health workers and damaged hospitals and health infrastructure.
The UN has called on the parties to the conflict to abide by international humanitarian law and ensure the safety and security of civilians and aid workers. The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has posed a serious challenge to the global economy as well as food security.
