Kathmandu. KATHMANDU: The People’s Movement Day is being observed today by organizing various programmes in commemoration of the restoration of democracy in Nepal.
The National Panchayati Raj Day is being observed today in commemoration of the restoration of democracy by ending the 30-year-old Panchayat regime on April 9, 2046. The Panchayat system initiated by King Mahendra on Poush 1, 2017 ended on April 19, 1990.
The 30-year-old Panchayat system was abolished after a joint people’s movement led by the Nepali Congress along with the left front. From that day, multiparty governance has been restored in Nepal.
The people’s movement led by Nepali Congress leader Ganesh Man Singh lasted for 50 days. The people’s movement had begun on 7 Falgun 19, 2007 BS on the occasion of the establishment of democracy in Nepal. The then King Birendra, in his address to the nation, announced the reinstatement of multiparty system on the 26th of September.
