Kathmandu. Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto will travel to Russia for oil talks amid a global energy crisis. He is scheduled to leave for Moscow from Jakarta on Sunday evening, a government source said.
According to the President, this visit is directly related to energy security. Foreign Minister Sugiano said oil supply and energy stability were the main agenda of the talks. President Prabowo said he will hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the situation of global geopolitics and energy market.
President Prabowo has visited South Korea and Japan in recent days. He described these visits as an attempt to strengthen his foreign policy. Addressing the ministers, he underscored the need of direct dialogue with major countries of the world by making energy security a national priority.
Indonesia is one of the world’s largest economies but is in a challenging situation in the oil sector. Even if the country produces some oil, it has to depend heavily on imports. The conflict in the Middle East has led to a spike in global oil prices, and the impact has also been felt in Indonesia.
Last month, the government announced fuel rationing to tackle the energy crisis. In addition, it has been made mandatory for government employees to work from home one day a week to save energy. The government has pledged not to increase the price of fuel in the near future.
Indonesia’s ambassador to Russia, Sergei Tolchenov, had earlier said that Russia was ready to supply oil to Indonesia. He indicated that he would provide assistance to Indonesia if needed.
Last year, Indonesia joined the BRICS group of emerging economies, including Russia and China. However, Prabowo also signed a trade deal with US President Donald Trump. This indicates that the country’s foreign policy is trying to balance.
