Proportional representation (PR) system programme to begin from December 20

Kathmandu. KATHMANDU — The election to the member of the House of Representatives under the proportional representation system is taking place from December 2.

Preparations for the programme have begun with the EC setting up the office of the returning officer at the EC’s Kantipath office for the proportional representation system from Sunday. As per the election program approved by the Election Commission, the political parties who want to participate in the election system can submit their applications by 10:00 am on December 7 and 4:00 pm.

The list of political parties that submitted their applications will be published from 10 am to 4 pm on December 10. The closed list of candidates will be submitted on December 26 and 14 and the closed list of candidates will be published on January 3.

Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari inaugurated the office of the returning officer under the proportional representation system.

Election Secretary Mahadev Pantha and Joint Secretary Yagya Prasad Bhattarai have been appointed as the returning officers under the proportional representation system. A total of 41 employees will be mobilized for the proportional election management. Acting Chief Election Commissioner Bhandari expressed the confidence that all sides would trust all sides to elect the representatives by separating the caste, geographical and gender groups as per the law with the help of the Office for National Statistics.

According to the existing law, the 275 members of the House of Representatives will be elected through two systems: direct and proportional representation. A total of 165 members will be directly elected to the Assembly and the remaining 110 members will be elected through proportional representation. The candidacy nomination under first-past-the-post (first-past) system has been set for January 19 at the office of the concerned returning officer.

Earlier on Sunday, Finance Minister Rameshwor Prasad Khanal and Law Minister Anil Kumar Sinha held a meeting with the Acting Chief Election Commissioners and Commissioners to discuss the situation of the preparations for the elections and the necessary support to be provided by the Government of Nepal to the EC for holding the elections in the coming days.
