Kathmandu. The Bagmati Civilization Integrated Development Committee, an empowered committee under the Ministry of Urban Development, has installed a trass barrier to collect waste floating in the rivers of Kathmandu.
Currently, the installation of cross barriers is being completed at six locations including Gokarna Barrage, Guheshwori, Tilganga Eye Hospital, Bagmati Manahara Dobhan, UN Park and 1 Karmanasha confluence of Manohara River at a cost of Rs 6.5 million.
Trass barriers prevent and deposit plastic, polythene, bottles, pieces of wood and other waste materials floating on the river surface.
Urbanization and unsystematic waste management have been found in the Bagmati, Bishnumati, Manohara and Dhobikhola rivers in the Kathmandu Valley. This helps in reducing river pollution.
Waste collected from the cross barrier can be regularly disposed of, sorted, reused and safely disposed of. It is expected to reduce pollution in the river, contribute positively to the beauty of the river, conservation of aquatic life and public health.
Plastic, polythene, bottles, wooden pieces and other waste materials floating on the surface of the river will be stopped without obstructing the flow of the river and the structure with rubber conveyor belt and floating parts will be installed in such a way that the surface of the trash barrier automatically fluctuates with the fluctuation of the water level.
