Kathmandu. KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has started the construction of public chairs for pedestrians to sit on the roadsides, parks and river corridors.
In this process, the old and dilapidated ones will be repaired, maintained and painted, the number will be increased in the places where there is a rush of passengers, uniformity will be maintained by placing the same type of chairs in one place, attractive and user-friendly.
Chief of Public Works Department Suresh Rai said, “We are working to accommodate the needs of pedestrians such as age group and physical condition. There is no plan to remove the chairs from the previous sites. There may be an exchange to maintain uniformity. ”
As part of this, the iron and wooden pedestals installed along the Singha Durbar-Bhadrakali road section have been repaired. There were two types of chairs. Of these, the old benches will be repaired and painted and kept in their place, said Rai.
Earlier, the chairs were shifted from the places where they were placed. He said that work will be done in such a way that it will also be managed.
KMC’s Public Works Department and Parks and Greenery Promotion Project have been carrying out works for managing public chairs. Among these, the project has given priority. In the month of September 2081, 140 public chairs were set up in different parts of the city. These chairs are one .5 meters long and half a meter wide.
The price of each chair has been Rs 18,655 including tax. Of these, 11 chairs have been placed along the footpath along the Bhadrakali-Singha Durbar road section. Besides, the corridors of Bagmati and Bagmati rivers, Guheshwori, Koteshwor, Kalmochan, among other places were also parked.
In the second phase, 49 were received. These chairs will be placed at Survey Department, Tinkune, Koteshwor Khand, Ratnapark, Maitighar, Babarmahal, Kalpokhari, among other places. Under Tactical Urbanism, 150 chairs will be provided in the third package. These chairs will be placed at different places as per the demand and need, the KMC informed.
